Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups potatoes, thinly sliced (about 4 medium-sized potatoes)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Add chopped onions and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
- Season the beef mixture with salt, black pepper, dried thyme, and dried rosemary. Stir well to combine.
- In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to create a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the beef or vegetable broth and milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens.
- Add the shredded cheddar cheese to the sauce, stirring until it’s fully melted and smooth.
- Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes in the greased baking dish.
- Spread half of the seasoned ground beef mixture over the potatoes.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the beef and potatoes.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, ground beef, and cheese sauce.
- Top the casserole with shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, allowing the cheese to turn golden and bubbly.
