For the Glaze:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the frothy yeast mixture, warm milk, sugar, salt, melted butter, and egg.
  3. Gradually add the flour to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment for kneading.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. Once risen, gently punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.
  7. Use a doughnut cutter or two differently sized round cutters (one larger for the doughnut, one smaller for the hole) to cut out doughnut shapes. Place the cut doughnuts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving space between each one.
  8. Cover the doughnuts with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise again for about 30-45 minutes until they puff up.
  9. Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C). Carefully place a few doughnuts into the hot oil, frying for about 1-2 minutes on each side until they turn golden brown.
  10. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried doughnuts onto a wire rack or a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  11. For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth in a shallow bowl.
  12. Dip each doughnut into the glaze while they’re still warm, coating them evenly. Place the glazed doughnuts back onto the wire rack to set the glaze.
